Things Found in Ouachita Soil

by Maudie Bryant

1. The echo of “yes ma’am” caught in my throat
2. A lightning bug that blinked out during Matlock
3. Flour sifted through the ribcage of bream
4. A mason jar of milk turning to Spanish moss
5. My name, called into the storm drain
6. Mud dauber poems scrawled on porch columns
7. My brother’s laugh trapped inside a wind chime
8. An unlabeled jar of mayhaw jelly, lost in the pantry
9. A map where north points to my father’s silence
10. My grandmother’s hands, growing from my wrists
